The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), has scheduled fresh local government elections in the state for August 9, 2025.
Recall that the Supreme Court last Friday, nullified the October 5, 2024, local government elections held in the state, on grounds of non -compliance to stipulated regulations
Chairman of the state electoral commission, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), announced the new date on Wednesday, at a stakeholders meeting held at the commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt, where he unveiled the elections guidelines.

RSIEC boss, emphasized that political parties that will be eligible to field candidates in August 9 election must complete, and submit an expression of interest form to participate on or before Monday, April 4, 2025, while the political parties are expected to conclude their primaries between April 21 -and May 12, 2025.
The chairman stated that campaigns for the elections, shall commence from July 7, 2025, and end on August 7, 2025.
Justice Enebeli noted that no nomination of candidate shall be valid unless the sum of N5, 000 is paid for the position of councilors, and N10, 000 for chairman and vice chairmanship positions.
The payments are to be made through bank draft or certified cheque, made payable to the commission by the candidate at the time of delivery of the nomination form.
Justice Enebeli, commended the stakeholders for their turn-out and assured that the commission will deliver a credible, free and fair local government elections.
