Makinde Expands Welfare, Transport Support for Vulnerable Citizens in Oyo…In a bold move to cushion the effects of Nigeria’s economic challenges, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has rolled out an expanded package of welfare and transportation support aimed at the state’s most vulnerable citizens.
The measures, introduced under the Sustainable Action for Economic Recovery (SAfER) initiative, reflect the administration’s determination to ease hardship and ensure inclusive development across communities.
As part of the newly announced measures, Governor Makinde has approved a six-month extension of the transportation subsidy that was initially launched to mitigate rising transport costs.
The subsidy, a key feature of the SAfER scheme, is designed to support daily commuting for low-income earners as well as facilitate the evacuation of farm produce from rural to urban markets.
This extension not only helps commuters but also serves as a lifeline for farmers and traders grappling with the increasing costs of logistics.
The subsidy will continue to be administered through strategic partnerships with trader unions and agricultural associations, ensuring that the benefits reach those who need them most.
Beyond transportation, the governor has also made significant strides in expanding healthcare access for the poor.
He recently unveiled a comprehensive health insurance program that will cover 100,000 vulnerable residents of the state.
Under this plan, the government, through the Oyo State Health Insurance Agency (OYSHIA), will fully pay the annual premiums for the selected individuals, granting them access to quality healthcare services at no cost.
This development is part of a broader effort by the state government to strengthen the public health system and protect low-income families from the financial burdens of medical care.
Another key component of the governor’s new intervention is targeted at small-scale farmers and rural entrepreneurs.
The state’s Agricultural Credit Corporation has broadened the eligibility criteria for its loan guarantor requirements, allowing not just civil servants, but also members of Community Development Associations (CDAs), farmers’ cooperatives, and artisans’ associations to stand as guarantors.

This reform is expected to unlock access to capital for thousands of rural farmers and agripreneurs, enabling them to expand their operations and improve productivity.
The governor believes that empowering smallholder farmers is central to achieving food security and creating sustainable livelihoods across Oyo State.
In response to rising food insecurity, the state government has also commenced the distribution of food relief packages to 200,000 of the poorest households in the state.
These packages are designed to provide immediate relief to families affected by inflation and other economic pressures.
In tandem with the food distribution, 10,000 farmers are being supported with agricultural inputs, including seeds, fertilizer, and tools, to boost production and stabilize food supply in the medium term.
The economic relief strategy doesn’t end there. Governor Makinde has committed N500 million each towards enterprise support funds targeted at youth agropreneurs and small and medium enterprises (SMEs), including traders and artisans.
The funds will be disbursed in the form of low-interest loans, aimed at enhancing productivity, generating employment, and stimulating the local economy.
By investing in grassroots entrepreneurship and agribusiness, the state government hopes to drive economic recovery from the bottom up.
These sweeping measures under the SAfER initiative underscore the Makinde administration’s holistic approach to governance.
Rather than relying on short-term palliatives, the governor is pushing for long-lasting structural support systems that will protect the most vulnerable citizens from the shocks of economic instability.
Speaking on the importance of the initiatives, Makinde emphasized that government must be proactive and responsive to the needs of the people, especially in difficult times.
As Oyo State continues to navigate the complex challenges of national economic reform, Governor Makinde’s efforts stand as a strong statement of commitment to social inclusion, poverty reduction, and sustainable growth.
