An investigation into the destruction of a Nigerian passport at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos has been opened by the Nigeria Immigration Service.
This was said in a statement made public on Sunday by Kenneth Udo, the NIS Public Relations Officer.
Following the viral video of a female passenger damaging a Nigerian Standard Passport at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, on social media, the Nigeria Immigration Service opened an official investigation, according to the statement.
The event has caused public concern as it was caught on camera and extensively shared on social media.
On Saturday, August 10, 2024, it showed a female tourist named Mrs. Igiebor ripping her husband’s Nigerian Standard Passport as soon as they arrived at the Lagos Airport.
When questioned about her behavior, an irate Igiebor is shown in the video responding, “Is it your passport?”
Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015 (as modified), which forbids the deliberate destruction of Nigerian travel papers, may have been broken by her acts, according to the NIS.
The act specifies fines for several kinds of infractions.
The statement also emphasized how committed the agency is to upholding the Immigration Act to protect national security and maintain the integrity of Nigeria’s diplomatic and legal systems.
The statement went on, “The Nigeria Immigration Service is steadfast in its dedication to maintaining the integrity and dignity of the country’s legal instruments, as well as to upholding the provisions of the Immigration Act in the interest of national security.”
