Who Wears The Cap As Ogbuku, Wike Clash Over NDDC Managing Director Position

February 9, 2025

A bitter power struggle is brewing in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) as the current Managing Director, Sam Ogbuku, faces opposition from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Ezenwo Nyesom Wike as he seeks second term.

In accordance with the NDDC act which makes the CEO eligible for two tenures, Ogbuku, who is from Bayelsa, is seeking reappointment, but Wike, who sources say was instrumental to Ogbuku reappointment after a previous board dissolution, is backing another candidate from Delta State, sparking a rift between the two former allies.

The power tussle has already begun and already taken it toll on the casual staff at the agency who have not paid salaries for the past month, coupled with the seizure of Horlicks Event Centre, which is owned by Alabo George Kelly, a strong allies of Wike, has further compounded the brewing conflict.

The situation has also affected the commission’s Executive Director, finance and administration, Boma Iyaye, who’s appointment was facilitated Wike, has been accused by Wike’s camp of abandoning their cause.

Iyaye is reportedly angry that he has been unable to facilitate employment for his own people in the agency, because Wike is favoring candidates from his own area.

Unfortunately, the crisis has slowed down activities at the commission, with no meaningful projects or initiatives underway.

Although an NDDC MD can be reappointment for a second term, it is not mandatory, however, the current development has raised concerns about the future of the NDDC and its ability to deliver on its mandate to develop the Niger Delta region, with external influence dictating the tune.
