Obi Doesn’t Need PDP or Atiku Coalition to Defeat Tinubu – NLC

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared that Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, does not require an alliance with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to challenge and defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

This position was made public as speculation grows over a possible coalition of opposition figures aimed at unseating the All Progressives Congress (APC) government in the next election cycle. In recent weeks, Atiku confirmed the formation of a political alliance involving himself, Obi, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, describing it as a united opposition front ahead of 2027.

Speaking in response, the NLC emphasized that Obi’s popularity and credibility with the electorate are sufficient to mount a strong presidential challenge on their own. According to the labour union, the focus should be on building a grassroots-driven, issue-based campaign rather than relying on political pacts that may not reflect the people’s genuine aspirations.

The NLC’s stance adds a new dimension to the ongoing debate on opposition strategy, as some political analysts argue that only a consolidated opposition can defeat the ruling APC. However, the labour union insists that a clear, independent vision for Nigeria’s future, championed by a credible candidate like Obi, could galvanize enough support to win at the polls.

This development comes as Nigeria’s political landscape begins to take shape ahead of the 2027 general election.
