The Nigeria Union of Journalists,, now has a new National President, he is Comrade Alhassan Yahya, he was declared in the early hours of Thursday by Comrade Mike Ikeogwu, Chairman of the Electoral Committee, at the 8th Triennial Delegates’ Conference of the Union held in Owerri, Imo state.
Comrade Alhassan Yahya, will succeed Comrade Chris Isiguzo.
Ikeogwu, announced that Yahya, who previously served as the NUJ’s Deputy National President, secured a total of 436 votes to defeat his opponents, Comrade Bamidele Atunbi, former National Treasurer of the Union, who had 97 votes while Comrade Garba Mohammed got 39 votes.
Declaring the Gombe State born journalist, as the duly elected National President of the NUJ, Ikeogwu, said Yahya, had met the requirements.
“By the powers vested in me as Chairman of the electoral committee, I hereby declare that Alhassan Yahya, having polled the highest number of votes, is returned as President of the NUJ for the next three years “, he said.
Comrade Alhassan Yahya, who according NUJ constitution, will serve a three-year term in office, Â is first National President of the NUJ to emerge from the North East region.

In his acceptance speech, the newly elected Presido’ pledged to “uphold the constitution of the NUJ with all fairness, equity, and justice” while carrying out his responsibilities.
Also elected was Comrade Abimbola Oyetunde, who emerged unopposed, became the first female deputy national president of the NUJ.
Oyetunde, the General Manager of Radio Nigeria Bronze FM in Edo State and a former member of the Union’s Board of Trustees, expressed her commitment to advancing the Union’s goals.
Other National Officers were also elected unopposed, include the former Chairman of the Abia State Council, Comrade Victor Ndukwe, as National Treasurer, Vice President of the B-Zone (Southwest), Comrade Ronke Samo and Zonal Secretary for the Southeast, Comrade Eze Adiukwu,
