Kenyan Edwin Kibet, For The Second Time, Wins 2025 Lagos City Marathon.

A Kenyan athlete, Edwin Kibet Koech, on Saturday, emerged the first-place winner in the men’s category of the 2025 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon.

Kibet, who was securing his second win haven won the 2023 edition of the marathon, dominated the men’s category, completing the 42-kilometre race in 2 hours and 14 minutes, to win the first position prize money of $50,000.

About 37,000 runners competed in the tenth edition of the annual 10km and 42km races of the 2025 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon.

In the women’s category, Ethiopia’s Guta Hirpa emerged victorious, clocking a time of 2 hours and 37.02 minutes

The 2025 champion is the third-time winner of the marathon women’s event.

While the first Nigerian to finish the race, Nyango Boyi made history by finishing in the top 10 positions.

He finished the race in 8th place, clocking a time of 2:25:41.58, which will earn him a prize award of $4,000. As the first Nigerian to finish the race, Boyi also won the N2 million top prize in the Nigerian category.

The 42km race commenced at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, by 6:30am while the 10km marathon started at the Grace Garden Event Centre in Lekki by 9:30am with both races terminating at Eko Atlantic City.

The General Manager of the race and retired Nigerian long jumper,  Yusuf Ali, noted that the figure was derived from the number of running kits distributed out of the over 60,000 runners who registered to participate.

“The enthusiasm for this race continues to grow every year. While we had over 60,000 registered runners, around 37,000 actively participated,” Ali stated.

The race which started in 2016 enters its 10th year with a World Athletics gold label and the organisers set their sights on getting the platinum label, thereby becoming the first marathon race in Africa to reach the status.

To facilitate the event, the Lagos State Government implemented an eight-hour road closure and traffic diversions on key routes from 5 am to 1 pm.
