FG Declares June 6 and 9 Public Holidays for Eid-ul-Adha Celebrations…The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Friday, June 6, and Monday, June 9, 2025, as public holidays in observance of this year’s Eid-ul-Adha celebration.
This announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the government and conveyed through a formal statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.
The declaration comes as Muslims across the country and the world prepare to celebrate Eid-ul-Adha, also known as the “Festival of Sacrifice,” one of the most significant holidays in the Islamic calendar.
The celebration honors the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command, a story that underscores themes of faith, devotion, and submission to divine will. It also marks the end of the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.
In his goodwill message to Nigerian Muslims and the broader public, Dr. Tunji-Ojo extended warm greetings and urged citizens to reflect deeply on the values embodied by the Eid-ul-Adha season.
He called on all Muslims to emulate the virtues of obedience, sacrifice, selflessness, and generosity, which form the cornerstone of the Sallah festival.
He further encouraged Nigerians to use the occasion as an opportunity for prayer and spiritual reflection, especially with regard to the peace, stability, and progress of the country.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo emphasized that beyond the festivities, the season should serve as a reminder of the importance of unity and the collective responsibility to build a stronger and more cohesive nation.
He expressed optimism that Nigeria can overcome its current challenges if citizens remain committed to national unity and uphold values that promote coexistence and mutual respect.
The Minister reiterated the government’s dedication to implementing reform-driven and people-oriented policies that align with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

According to him, these policies are being crafted with the aim of improving the quality of life for Nigerians and steering the country toward sustainable economic growth and development.
He acknowledged the socio-economic difficulties faced by many Nigerians but assured the public that the administration remains resolute in its effort to restore public confidence through strategic interventions in areas such as security, infrastructure, education, healthcare, and employment.
The Federal Government’s decision to declare both Friday and Monday as public holidays is expected to allow Muslims ample time to observe religious rites, reunite with family members, and engage in charitable acts, which are intrinsic to the spirit of Eid-ul-Adha.
It also provides an extended break for the general population, giving Nigerians an opportunity to rest, reflect, and rejuvenate.
As the nation prepares for the two-day holiday, security agencies have been placed on alert to ensure that the celebrations are conducted peacefully.
The government has called on citizens to remain law-abiding and to report any suspicious activities to relevant authorities.
It also reminded the public to observe safety measures and maintain cleanliness in line with health advisories, especially during gatherings.
The Ministry of Interior, in its statement, concluded with a message of peace, urging Nigerians to embrace the values of tolerance and understanding, especially in a time where societal divisions need healing and collective action.
The Eid-ul-Adha celebration, the statement noted, is a time for generosity and compassion—not only toward one’s family and friends but also toward the less privileged and vulnerable members of society.
As Muslims across the country gather in prayer and celebration, the Federal Government’s message is clear: the occasion should inspire hope, deepen faith, and renew the shared commitment to the nation’s progress.
With unity, resilience, and a renewed sense of purpose, Nigeria can move forward to a more prosperous and peaceful future.
