Armed Herders, Boko Haram Kill Soldiers, Civilians in Benue, Borno

Fresh violence has erupted in Benue and Borno States, leaving soldiers and civilians dead in two separate attacks that underline the persistent insecurity plaguing Nigeria.

In Benue State, armed herders stormed Ikobi community in Apa Local Government Area on Wednesday afternoon, opening fire on both security operatives and residents.

Two soldiers stationed in the community were killed, and their weapons seized by the attackers. Two civilians also lost their lives in the assault, while several others sustained injuries.

According to the Chairman of Apa LGA, Adam Ogwola, the bodies of the civilians were buried the following morning in accordance with local customs, while the remains of the soldiers were taken by the military.

Security forces have since been deployed to restore calm to the troubled area.

This latest incident follows an earlier attack in late May in which four Mobile Policemen were ambushed and killed in Udei community, Guma LGA, less than 15 minutes from the Yelewata area.

The assailants, also believed to be armed herders, attempted to advance toward nearby villages, forcing residents and displaced persons into hiding.

Intense clashes in the surrounding bushes eventually repelled the attackers, but the episode left behind fear and heightened tensions.

In Borno State, Boko Haram militants continued their wave of violence. On the night of April 18, insurgents attacked Yamtake, a resettled internally displaced persons’ community in Gwoza Local Government Area.

The militants targeted both the military post and civilians, killing two soldiers and an undisclosed number of residents before reinforcements could respond.

The assault came as communities in Borno struggle to recover from years of displacement and ongoing extremist threats.

The incident in Yamtake is one of several deadly operations carried out by Boko Haram this year. On January 26, a suicide bomber struck an army convoy in Malam-Fatori, killing 27 soldiers and wounding many others.

In May, the group launched coordinated raids on military formations in Rann and Gajiram, killing five soldiers and injuring six more.

The attacks in both states reflect the complex layers of insecurity facing Nigeria. In the Middle Belt, farmer-herder conflicts—driven by disputes over land, grazing routes, and dwindling resources—have escalated into deadly armed confrontations.

In the northeast, Boko Haram and its splinter faction ISWAP continue to wage an insurgency that has displaced millions and cost tens of thousands of lives over the past decade.

Security analysts warn that the overlapping crises in different regions stretch the capacity of the armed forces and undermine efforts to maintain stability.

While local authorities in Benue and Borno have called for increased security presence, many communities remain vulnerable to surprise attacks.

For residents of places like Ikobi and Yamtake, the killings are not isolated events but part of a long, unbroken chain of violence that has eroded livelihoods, forced mass displacement, and deepened fear.

Families continue to flee ancestral homes in search of safety, while soldiers and police deployed to protect them face mounting risks in volatile areas.

As the country grapples with these challenges, the latest bloodshed serves as a grim reminder that peace remains elusive in several parts of Nigeria.

Whether in the farmlands of Benue or the border towns of Borno, the cost of insecurity is measured daily in human lives.
